  几百年来,哈佛大学正是在追求真理和勇于开拓的信念鼓舞之下,始终不遗余力地引导学生为理想、为实现人生价值进行不懈的追求和奋斗。也正是在这种生生不息的精神熏陶之下,哈佛才得以在美国的名牌大学中始终保持着独一无二的特色,从而造就了一代又一代的社会精英,在各种领域中做出许多影响重大的贡献。

  哈佛大学塑造的精英之一、著名的思想家拉尔夫•沃尔多•爱默生曾在一次联谊会上发表了一篇名为"美国学者"的讲演。在演讲中,他强烈抨击了美国社会中 "灵魂从属于金钱的‘拜金主义',以及资本主义劳动大分工使人异化为物"的现象,强调人的价值。这一演讲轰动一时,在民众中造成了巨大的反响。

  要知道,爱默生极有可能因为这样的言论而遭到社会多方人士的指责或抨击,但哈佛的教育给予了他强大的精神动力,他觉得他有义务说出事实的真相,揭露出社会上存在的不良现象以及人们心中的不良思想。即使因此遭到打击或不公的待遇,也要坚持自己的想法和说法。

  他认为,作为学者,其根本任务便是"自由而勇敢地从事物的表象中揭示真实,以鼓舞人、提高人、引导人"。通过对哈佛"求是崇真"的校园思想的深入认识和解析,并以此指导自己的思维,爱默生终于创立了自己独特的思想,提出了"依靠自我,尊重自我,独立自助,崇尚个性"的观点。

  相信你自己,在"追求真理"旗帜的影响下,追求并坚持你认为是正确的道路。爱默生正是本着对真理对事实的不断探求,不因压力而违背自己的思想认识,才最终树立了自己的思想体系和人格魅力。

  哈佛学子心中对于真理的探寻和执著精神,同样离不开其作为领导者的校长对于学校精神的坚持和发扬。

  2000年,美国哈佛大学遴选校长,新卸任的总统克林顿和副总统戈尔被提名。但哈佛很快就把这两个人排除在外,解释理由是:克林顿和戈尔可以领导一个大国,但不一定能领导好一所大学,领导一流大学必须要有丰富的学术背景,而克林顿与戈尔都不具备。

  后来,原任美国财政部长、世界银行首席经济学家、副行长萨默斯被挑选为新校长,因为他在经济学研究方面做到了一流,是国际知名学者。

  虽然萨默斯最后被迫辞职,但完全是由于他个人的原因:他在学校管理方法和领导作风方面存在问题,导致他与同事的关系紧张并严重影响哈佛的团队精神,于是哈佛的教授纷纷向萨默斯投下了不信任票。

  尽管萨默斯在财经界赫赫有名,但在哈佛这个校园里,他不能享有一丝的特权----这是哈佛精神的生动诠释,反对特权、崇尚平等,无论他的身上有多少光环,只要他是哈佛人,就要传承和发扬哈佛的精神,如此,学生耳濡目染,才会深受其思想精髓的熏陶。

  也正是经过一代又一代哈佛人对于优良传统的秉承和不断努力进取,哈佛对于追求真理这样一个最初的思想,最终形成一种学校的传统精神和培养哈佛精英的重要学术标准和道德标准。

耶鲁:校园环境影响能力培养
  在耶鲁,校方非常注重校园的学习环境对于人才培养的重要意义。为了培养和提高学子们独立的思辨能力,提供一个自由良好的生长环境,耶鲁做了以下努力:

  首先,耶鲁所设置的必修课相对来说比较少,绝大多数学生都能选择自己喜爱的课程。但是有一个条件,学生必须学习一些不同领域的课程。

  在美国的高等教育中有这样一个观念,就是在学生头两年的学习中,他们需要广泛地涉猎各种各样的学科,而在后两年的学习中再确定自己的专业----这和很多国家包括我国的大学在大一刚进校时就让学生确定自己专业的做法有所不同。

  耶鲁认为,如果刚进大学就分专业,那么学生对很多学科都还没有直观的认知度,选择的余地也非常狭小,一旦进入一个系,就等于为自己找好了一条已经确定的路,必须一步步走下去,没有什么可以探索的,空间很小,想转个弯都很难。而让学生涉猎不同的专业,则有利于他们更好地了解自己到底适合什么,并有足够的时间思考自己该选择什么。

  其次,耶鲁大学实行"教授治校"的办法,由教授们组成教授会,参与学校的教学和具体事务的决策和管理工作。

  耶鲁大学的教学力量一直是它引以为傲的重要资本,耶鲁认为,教授当家做主可以更好地保证学术的自由与发展。在耶鲁,教授们习惯于我行我素,各人的教学方式也出现了很大的自由度。

  小型的研讨班是耶鲁课堂上经常见到的学习方式,教授们通过这样的形式鼓励和激发学生发表自己的想法并努力捍卫自己的观点,而且随时欢迎学生在课堂上对自己提出问题和质疑。

  学术自由带来的积极后果,就是一个学生想往哪个方向发展,都会受到教授的鼓励和帮助,只要那是一个合理的发展方向,不管你的思维往哪个方向突破,教授们都会帮助你,扶持你。在你的独特思维形成的过程中,没有任何框框的束缚,也没有锁死的框架,没有人逼着你按照预先设定好的方向往前走,也没有人无端地阻止你限制你。这对于一个人思维素质的培养,具有非常重要的意义。

  就像种子在良好环境下健康发芽,小树在自由空气中茁壮成长一样,耶鲁整个校园给人的感觉就是这样。耶鲁的教授一个个都桀骜不驯,敢于上书政府,敢于批评美国参军征兵法,法学院的教授甚至敢于直面美国国会。这种敢于挑战的精神和强烈的思维刺激,对学生来说是一种极大的激励,使得他们敢于吐露自己的真实想法,在学术和为人处世上形成自己独到的新颖的新思想而不屈服。

  第三,耶鲁大学始终坚持学术的独立性。为了维护耶鲁的传统独立精神,历届校长一直抵触来自政治和经济的压力,即使付出再大的代价也在所不惜。

  越战时期,美国政府下令:凡是自称以道德或宗教理由反战者一律不准领取奖学金。当时美国各个名校都遵照政府的指示行事,唯有耶鲁大学,始终不移地坚守着自己学术独立的阵地,仍然以申请者的成绩为奖学金的评比标准而无视战争和政治的因素。为此,耶鲁付出了巨大的代价,失去了联邦政府的一大笔基金,经济上几度陷入困境。但当时的校长金曼布鲁斯特,却在耶鲁学子中获得了极高的声誉和尊敬。社会的发展需要学生大胆地质疑社会现实,敢于向权威说"不",这种"学术为上"、"学术独立"的精神潜移默化地影响着学子们,让他们敢于坚持自己的学术和为人理想,绝不屈服。

  耶鲁提倡讨论式课堂授课方式。

  一位西方教育家讲过,大学的本质在于把一群优异的年轻人聚在一起,让他们的创造力互相激励,产生使他们终身受益的智慧。所以,教授是哪里的博士,出了多少专著,并不是主要的,重要的是大学的教学如何为学子们创造一种更有成效的互相激发智慧和创造力的环境。

  曾经有位在耶鲁大学的中国留学生告诉我,他在耶鲁已经三年,竟然一次大课都没有上过,几乎都是研讨班形式的课。这种研讨班,五六个或十几个学生与教授围坐在一起,就自己的查阅的资料和思考的结果各抒己见,教授只是起引导协调的作用,学生的讨论才是最重要的课堂内容。这就是所谓年轻人智慧的互相激励。

  最初,这位中国留学生十分不适应美国大学的课堂方式,学生如此的积极,而他几乎完全只听不说。结果,没多久,他就收到了一封教授写的"委婉"的信,信中问他,为什么上课总是不说话,有什么原因吗?这时,他意识到自己必须改变,也逐步放开自己,投入到"热火朝天"的课堂讨论中去。

  即使是本科生,在听完教授的理论课之后,必须参加由研究生助教主持的研讨班。可以说,在耶鲁,研讨班贯穿了大学教育的始终。

  我们可以看出,在这样的环境下,每个学生的角色已经不仅仅是受教育者,而同时是教育者。学生不仅有学的义务,更有为他人、课堂讨论贡献智慧、交流所得的压力。并且,在这样的教育体制中,能让不同背景的学生将各自的不同阶层、种族、文化中的经验带进课堂,社会各个集团的思想在这里交锋、整合,使学生接触到更多元化的信息和知识,培养了多角度的思辨能力。这样的方式让学生在毕业后很快融入社会,为社会、国家贡献他们的智慧,同时也为社会的融合和稳定提供了部分基础。

斯坦福:敢于挑战,勇于冒险
  斯坦福大学校长约翰•亨尼斯在谈到斯坦福的办学理念时说道:

  "我们的理念是要追求新的知识,推动我们的学业与学生进行交流,因为我们不断地进行研究,不断地进行教育,我们认为最重要的一个财产就是要双方都达到优秀,在教和学方面相互影响,而且都达到杰出的效果,这是我们大学的一个理念。"

  而对于这个理念具体表现在哪里,亨尼斯是这样说的:

  "斯坦福最有特点的、区别于很多世界其他大学的就是它有不断冒险的精神,在教学和研究方面都有这样的精神,不断地寻求和探索新的方向及新的理念。"

  很多新事物的出现或者新旧事物的更新换代,都离不开一些冒险和挑战的成分,如果只是在固有的圈子里面打转转,那么世界对你来说也就只有这么小了。在斯坦福这样的校园,处处显露出不断拼搏的踪迹,也处处充斥着新事物代替旧事物的新鲜空气,身处这样的环境,自然无时无刻不被其影响着。

  斯坦福的教育者认为,鼓励青年人自己去发现他们追求的答案,不是一种最容易的学习方法,但却是回报最丰厚的一种学习方法。教育能做出的最重要的一条贡献,就是发展学生追求创造性方法的本能和好奇心。

  要知道,随着时间的推移,学过的许多东西都有可能会被忘记,但是一个人对于未知事物的好奇心和探索欲望,对于提出问题和找出答案的能力却未必会消失。无论是哪个国家、哪个地区的学校,都应当明白这个道理,并认真汲取这个经验,因为学生能够接受到这种教育制度是他们作为教育者的重要职责,而学生能否接受到这种教育制度,亦是关系到他们自身能否在未来成长为精英的一个重要砝码。

  对此,斯坦福大学教授、著名的化学家保罗•伯格有着自己的见解:

  "我们每个人都在寻求自己的幸福之路。1980年,我在瑞典接受诺贝尔奖时曾说过,我是获得了双重幸福的人。因为除了诺贝尔奖给我的声誉之外,研究工作本身也给了我难以用语言表达的欢乐----新的发现、开创新事业和进入无人涉足过的新领域----这些都使我感到无比激动和愉悦。这种巨大的幸福不仅科学家能够体会到,从事文学、音乐、艺术甚至商业的人,也可能获得可与之比拟的回报。每一个愿意在未知领域里冒险的人,都有可能获此殊荣。这种冒险极富挑战性和诱惑力,值得我们为之竭尽全力。"

  此外,斯坦福精英、雅虎创始人杨致远也曾经说过:"青年人要有鸿远的梦想,要敢于尝试。尝试会有风险,但失败并不值得羞愧。只要敢于冒险,你定会前程致远,真正体验到人生的意义。"

  在美国,鼓励不断挑战和冒险的学术教育方针并非只针对大学生。很多同学在其青少年时代,就开始被灌输这样的学习思维。老师对于同学们提出的问题,往往不会给予直接的回答,他们并不认可学生采用那种不费脑筋的学习方法,而是鼓励他们到有关的书籍中自已去寻找答案,此外,他们还经常引导学生通过到图书馆查找相关资料或者亲自做实验的方法去寻求答案、解决问题。通过这样的方式,学生会在若干时日后发现自己所得到的收益比预想的要多得多。

  在进入高等学府之后,老师同样会鼓励同学们提出超出他们知识和经验以外,甚至是超出老师本人的知识和经验以外的问题,思考那些还未得出答案的问题和事物。

  保罗•伯格大学期间成为学校课外科学俱乐部的成员,他的老师鼓励他通过实验来解决某些与自然界相关的问题。

  他说:"一开始,我只是重复已经做过的实验,随后,我被要求设计新的实验方法来解决我自己提出的难题。"

  在成为斯坦福的教授之后,保罗不仅自己始终对未知新领域秉持这样的冒险态度和研究精神,对于他的学生,也采取了同样的教育方式。他清楚地了解到,在任何时候,对于探索未知世界的激情并找出答案的强烈欲望,都是一个人向精英迈出的一个步伐。基于这样的校园文化以及对校园文化精髓的领悟,保罗终于成为病毒繁殖、侵袭正常细胞并使之癌变的最早研究者,获得了1980年的诺贝尔化学奖。

  而斯坦福大学第五任校长史德龄,还把斯坦福的创建本身看作是不避风险、敢于革新的表现。当然,在步骤上他却表现得十分稳妥,"在破旧立新之前,要把新东西看准。"他常常这样告诫自己的学生。结果,在他治校的19年间,新事物层出不穷,各项业绩都非常可观。

  坚持在教学和科学研究中以挑战自我,勇于冒险为育人法则,通过追求知识与技术的不断革新,不断探索,斯坦福以此为基点来培养第一流的学生,使得有些斯坦福学子,即使在很久之后,还流淌着这样的血液。

  造就挑战与冒险的理念,由此便派生出来许多类似的奇迹,斯坦福的精神,就是这样被催化、被辐射出去的。

  这就是为什么在创校的初始阶段,同美国东海岸的其他大学相比,斯坦福大学只不过是一所名不见经传的"乡村大学",但是到了1985年却被评为全美大学第一名的关键因素。属于"后起之秀"的斯坦福之所以能够后来居上,源于其本身的成长历程便是一条不断挑战自我、锐意革新的艰苦创业之路。
